EPA 608 Exam Format, Questions & Passing Score

Understand the federal Section 608 test structure, 25-question sections, Universal 100-question format, proctoring, and passing scores.

Federal test structure

The eCFR requires 25 Core questions and 25 questions from each relevant technical group. A Universal test contains 100 questions: 25 Core, 25 Type I, 25 Type II, and 25 Type III.

TYPE CERTIFICATION

50 questions

25 Core + 25 questions from Type I, Type II, or Type III.

UNIVERSAL

100 questions

25 questions in each of the four sections.

Passing rules

The closed-book passing score is 70 percent. A Type I mail-in format uses an 84 percent passing score. Approved providers may describe their scheduling and retake policies differently, so confirm those details before paying.

Universal requires qualifying Core credit. A Core test taken open-book cannot be used to earn Universal. Universal testing must be closed-book and proctored.

What can be used during testing?

The proctor controls the secure environment and identification check. Confirm permitted calculator, pressure-temperature chart, and scratch-paper rules with the chosen approved provider before test day.

How our practice mode matches the structure

The free Universal mode draws 25 questions from each section. It grades every section separately because a strong total score should not hide a weak technical section.
