The complete certification path
Choose the correct type
Match your expected work to Type I, II, III, Universal, or Section 609 for vehicle A/C.
Study Core and the required technical section
Training is voluntary, but passing an EPA-approved test is mandatory.
Select an EPA-approved certifying organization
Use EPA's current list. Ask about proctoring, delivery method, price, retakes, score timing, and card delivery.
Take the correct testing format
Type II, Type III, and Universal require a closed-book proctored exam. An open-book Core cannot be used toward Universal.
Save the provider records
Keep the provider name, score report, certification number, and copies of the card. EPA does not directly replace lost cards.
What the credential does—and does not do
Section 608 authorizes the applicable refrigerant-handling work under federal rules and supports refrigerant purchasing within the certification scope. It does not automatically replace state or local HVAC contractor licensing, employer training, electrical licensing, or job-site safety requirements.
