Online does not automatically mean unproctored
EPA's approved-program list includes organizations that offer remote or online testing. For Type II, Type III, and Universal, the federal standard requires a closed-book, proctored test in a secure environment. Remote proctoring can satisfy that structure when provided by an approved organization.
Type I is the exception—but read the goal carefully
Type I may be offered in formats that differ from the proctored technical exams. However, an open-book Core result cannot be used toward Universal. If Universal may matter later, choose a qualifying proctored path now.
Best planning rule: If you expect to service more than small appliances, avoid buying a stand-alone open-book route without confirming whether its Core credit can be combined toward Universal.
