Universal is four passes, not one blended average
The test structure contains 25 questions in each section. Prepare to meet the passing threshold in Core, Type I, Type II, and Type III individually.
Recommended study order
- Core: build the legal, environmental, recovery, and safety foundation.
- Type I: learn small-appliance definitions and recovery percentages.
- Type II: master leak testing, high-pressure recovery, components, and safety.
- Type III: master chiller behavior, purge units, freeze prevention, oil, and charging.
- Universal simulation: take 100 questions and diagnose section-level weakness.
Four-session plan
Session 1
Core lesson + Core 25.
Session 2
Type I and Type II lessons + focused tests.
Session 3
Type III lesson + Type III 25.
Session 4
Universal 100 + explanation review.
Testing-format trap: An open-book Core cannot count toward Universal. Choose a proctored qualifying path.
Source basis: EPA Section 608 Test Topics and 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F. Review the official sources before the real exam because regulatory details can change.
